Psychological treatment plays an important part in the treatment of many mental disorders. This can range from a flexible approach, such as supportive counselling, to a formal structured therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).
If an individual's condition appears as though it may benefit from psychological treatment, they will be offered an assessment with a psychologist to discuss the therapy options in greater detail
Psychological treatment is not passive; an individual must be able and willing to engage with the therapy in order to benefit from it. This is also why it is considered along with other options when making a treatment plan; it may be, for example, that someone may need some medication initially to make sufficient improvement to then be able to engage in psychological treatment.
