Medication is commonly used in the treatment of mental disorders. However, it is important that it is used appropriately as, if given for the wrong reason, it will not bring about an improvement and may make things worse.
The exact medication depends on the condition being treated. Some medications, such as antidepressants or antipsychotics, are given for the underlying condition and will be monitored and adjusted according to how an individual responds over a period of weeks or months. Other medications may be prescribed for short-term use to alleviate symptoms which are causing distress or discomfort, for example, sleeping tablets.
Some medications may require you to have a blood test prior to starting them. All medications are capable of causing side effects, although not everyone who takes a certain medication will suffer with side effects. The desired effects, side effects and proposed length of treatment will be discussed with an individual when medication is being recommended as a part of their treatment plan.
